What is Your Ministry?

(This is how happy you’ll be when you discover your ministry.)

What is Your Ministry?

There is a general misunderstanding about Christian ministry. It is that it only belongs to the professional Christians - the “clergy.” We’re divided up like this: there are the ministers, and then the rest of us. (And the “rest of us” pay the bills.)

The truth is that if you’re a follower of Christ, you are called to the ministry.

According to Ephesians 4:11-12, the task of our leaders is simply to equip the ordinary believers for the work of the ministry. And if that is our leaders’ task, the success of their work can be measured by how well they are equipping us to engage in the ministry.

So what is “ministry”? Ministry is simply service. Ministers are servants. Ministry is bringing benefit to others.

What is your ministry? Taking care of a child or the elderly is ministry; showing hospitality is ministry; speaking comfort, encouragement, or wise words is ministry; prayer is ministry; befriending the lonely is ministry. Doctors minister; businessmen minister; mayors minister; teachers and counselors minister; parents minister. Do it all in his name. Do it as unto him.

Jesus said that the greatest among us will be the servant, or the minister, of all (Mt. 23:11). He said he came to serve, and not be served (Mk. 10:45). Our King is a Servant King. The plan is for all his citizens to be servants like him.

Imagine this kingdom of servants, invading the world’s cultures with this determined intent to benefit others. Those servants will be the best employees, the best neighbors, the best family members, the best friends. They will inherit the earth! Imagine, hundreds and thousands and even millions of ministers showing up to bring benefit in all their spheres of life!!

So two things: 1) take some time to put into words how God uses you to serve the common good, and 2) encourage everyone around you to identify and engage in their ministries!
